Florida summers are no joke — and while we love our sunny state, extreme heat can be dangerous for our pets.
As a pet photographer (and dog mom), I see first-hand how the weather affects our furry friends, so I wanted to share some essential tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable.
Tip 1 – Limit Outdoor Activity
- Walk early morning or after sunset
- Keep midday playtime indoors
- Watch for signs of overheating (heavy panting, drooling, weakness)
Tip 2 – Hydration Is Key
- Fresh, cool water always available
- Portable collapsible bowl for outings
- Add ice cubes for extra cooling
Tip 3 – Hot Surfaces
- Pavement and sand can burn paws
- Test with your hand: if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them
- Use booties or grassy paths when possible
Tip 4 – Cool Retreats
- Provide shaded outdoor spots if they must be outside
- Indoor cooling mats or fans for pets at home
- Frozen treats (safe recipes)
Tip 5 – Never Leave Pets in Cars
- Even for a “few minutes” — temps can rise to dangerous levels rapidly
- Florida law protects pets from being left in hot cars
Summer in Tampa Bay is beautiful, but our pets depend on us to keep them safe.
As we wait for cooler days (and perfect portrait weather), let’s make sure our furry friends stay healthy and happy all season long.
